LEWISBURG, Pa. - Head men's basketball coach Pat Flannery will return to the sideline this week as Bucknell prepares for the Patriot League Tournament, which begins Friday at The Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, Md.
Bucknell's men's and women's teams will both face Holy Cross in the opening round of the tournament. The women will battle the Crusaders at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, while the men play at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.
Flannery missed the men's team's road trip to Holy Cross and Colgate this past weekend while recovering from a successful, precautionary medical procedure performed last Thursday. He began feeling under the weather in the first half of Bucknell's Feb. 22 win over Army and did not return for the second half. Flannery will be back at practice this week as the Bison prepare for Saturday's matchup with the Crusaders.
The Bison Club and Dining Services will be sponsoring a fan bus to the men's game on Saturday. The bus, which is already half full, will leave from the Langone Athletics & Recreation Center at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday morning. The cost is $35 for adults and $20 for students, and that includes the bus ticket, game ticket and a meal and movies on the bus. To reserve a seat, contact Todd Newcomb at 570-577-1771 by 9 a.m. on Thursday, March 4.
For those in attendance at The Show Place Arena on Saturday, a reception for alumni, parents and friends will be held following the men's game at 4:30 p.m. in the Tack Room. The barbeque buffet is $10 per person. For reservations, please contact David Flinchbaugh at 570-577-3223.
Bucknell's men are seeded fourth after posting a 9-5 league ledger (13-14 overall) and will face Holy Cross in the opening round. The home teams won both Bucknell-Holy Cross regular-season showings. The Bison won 77-67 on Feb. 1, while the Crusaders prevailed 72-61 on Friday in Worcester, Mass. Holy Cross has eliminated the Bison in the league semifinals in each of the last two seasons.
The Bison women went 7-7 in Patriot League play (14-13 overall) and will be the No. 5 seed. They will battle fourth-seeded Holy Cross on Friday afternoon. Bucknell and Holy Cross split two meetings this season, with the road team winning both contests. The Bison won 85-82 at the Hart Center on Friday behind Desire Almind's 30 points, 18 rebounds and eight steals. The Crusaders won 71-55 at Sojka Pavilion on Feb. 1.
Last season Holy Cross edged Bucknell 66-63 in the tourney semifinals, avenging a loss to the Bison in the 2002 league championship game at the Hart Center.
