LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell sophomore guard Charles Lee (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard H.S.) was named the Patriot League Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the first time in his career on Monday after leading the Bison to a key 67-62 victory over American over the weekend.
Lee was also named the Lewisburg Hotel Bison Athlete of the Week.
Lee was instrumental in the win, scoring 16 points while leading the team in rebounds (6), assists (4) and steals (3). Most importantly, he made six crucial free throws in the final 1:04 to preserve the narrow win. Three times he went to the line during that stretch with Bucknell leading by only two or three points, and each time he made both ends to make it a two-possession contest.
The victory was Bucknell's sixth in its last seven games and vaulted the Bison (9-12, 5-3) into a tie for third place with American in the Patriot League standings.
Bucknell's recent resurgence can be traced to Lee's increased scoring production. Heading into Patriot League play the 6'3" guard was averaging 5.2 points per game. In eight league contests, he is averaging 15.9 ppg, the second-best mark in the league.
Through 21 games Lee ranks fourth in the league in free-throw shooting (.822), sixth in steals (1.57), eighth in assists (2.71), 11th in field-goal percentage (.474) and 15th in scoring (9.3).
Lee is the second Bison to be honored as player of the week this season. Classmate Kevin Bettencourt has earned the honor three times, including last week.
Bucknell has another important Patriot League contest on Tuesday night at Sojka Pavilion against Lehigh at 7 p.m. The Mountain Hawks sit in a first-place tie with Lafayette at 7-1.
