Bucknell Men Finish Second at Rhode Island Invitational

KINGSTON, R.I. - Bucknell's men's track and field team finished ahead of seven other squads at the Rhode Island Invitational on Saturday, racking up 138 points, bested only by Rhode Island's 230. Noel Powell, Tom Prochilo, Greg Costello, and Jeff Arek won individual events for the Bison.
Powell had Bucknell's first six points, finishing a third-place 6.61 seconds in the 55 meter dash. Matt Corbetta added two more with his seventh-place 51.27-second finish in the 400 meters, and Prochilo claimed the 500 in 1:06.24 while posting 10 points for the Bison. Eric Guja added one point in the event, finishing eighth.
Three Bison scored in the 3000 meter run, with Dan Lounsbury finishing second in 8:34.00 and claiming eight points, Wes Reinhardt finishing third with six points, and K.C. Brown finishing eighth with one point. Three Bison also scored in the mile, as Costello won the event in 4:17.47 and took 10 points, while Sean McCarthy finished second with eight points and Mark Caroleo took one point in eighth place. Koran Evans finished sixth in the 800 and took three points by completing the race in 1:58.89, while Aaron Hanlon took eight points and finished second in the 1000 meter run in 2:31.87. John Trotta finished just behind him in third and took six points.
Mike Mellas scored in the 55 meter hurdles, taking six points in third place while finishing the race in 7.99 seconds. Bucknell's first relay team in the 4x400 took second and eight points by finishing in 3:26.22, while a Bison team also took seventh place and two points. In the 4x800 race, Bison teams finished third and seventh, taking home eight points between them.
In the high jump, Drew Folk leapt 6'3 ?" while taking six points and finishing third. Arek won 10 points and the pole vault competition by leaping his personal best of 15'3". Chris Thomson also took five points by finishing fourth. Powell claimed a long jump win, earning 10 points by leaping 23'4 ?", while Mellas took five points in fifth and Thomas Bennet took a point in eighth. Tyler Palumbo finished seventh in the triple jump, taking two points while leaping 42'3 ?". Dan Frake completed the scoring in the last two events, including the shot put, where he finished fourth and took five points, throwing 46' ?", and the weight throw, where he finished eighth, won one point, and threw the implement 45' ?".
Bucknell's track and field squads will come home Saturday to host the Bucknell Winter Classic before hosting the Patriot League Championships Feb. 20-22.
