Garcia, Reed, Woodward, Tomovich Honored at Women's Sports Luncheon

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Senior thrower Maria Garcia (Providence, R.I./Hope), sophomore swimmer Lauren Reed (S. Plainfield, N.J./Mt. St. Mary's Acad.), freshman swimmer Nikki Woodward (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow), and basketball player Brooke Tomovich (Long Branch, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) were selected as their sport's honorees at this month's Bucknell Women's Sports Luncheon, sponsored by K.I.C.K.S. Self Defense for Women and Curves Fitness for Women.
Garcia was honored for her performance in the weight throw the last two months. She entered Bucknell's first meet, the Bison Opener on Dec. 6, in third place on the school's all-time list for top distances in the weight throw, and jumped to second in her first meet. With her personal high coming into the year at 52'2 ?", Garcia threw 52' 5 ?" that first meet and moved within three-and-a-half inches of the record on Jan. 24 at the Bucknell Octagonal where she threw 52' 8 ?". She broke the record last Saturday with a throw of 53' 11 ?", besting Lisa Allen's 1997 mark by 11 ?". Garcia and the Bison will are nearing one of their landmark meets of the indoor season, the Patriot League Championships, to be held Feb. 20-22 at Bucknell. This weekend, Bucknell will travel to Rhode Island for that school's invitational on Saturday before hosting the Bucknell Winter Classic on Feb. 14.
Reed has competed in the shorter freestyle and butterfly competitions for the Bison this year, turning in two top-10 performances in the 100 yard butterfly this season. First, in the Bucknell Trials/Finals Invite on Dec. 6-7, Reed finished that race in 58.80 seconds, good for sixth-best all-time. The following meet, Jan. 17 against Colgate, Reed bettered the mark to 58.78 seconds, moving her into fifth place on the list.
Woodward has competed in butterfly, breaststroke, and individual medley events in her freshman season, and has earned a spot on the 200 yard butterfly list. Woodward swam the 10th-best time in Bucknell history in the 200 fly on Jan. 17 against Colgate, finishing the race in 2:10.70. Reed, Woodward, and the rest of the Bison swimmers head to Lehigh this Saturday for the chance to finish the season 6-0 in dual meets before hosting five Patriot League teams in the Bison Invitational on Feb. 14. Bucknell's swimmers are currently on a school-record dual meet winning streak of 15 meets and have not lost since November 17, 2001 to Navy and American. Following the Bison Invitational, Bucknell will head to Annapolis, Md. for the Patriot League Championships Feb. 26-28.
Tomovich leads the team in three-point shooting percentage, finding the bottom of the net on 10 of 29 attempts, good for a .345 average. She is also third on the team in overall scoring, averaging 9.2 points per game and 10.1 points per game against conference opponents. Tomovich scored her career high in points, 17, against Navy on Jan. 17, and pulled down a season-high eight rebounds against Army the following game while scoring 13 points. The Bucknell women's basketball team begins the second round of Patriot League play on Saturday hosting American, followed by a visit from Lehigh on Feb. 10. The next K.I.C.K.S. and Curves Women's Sports Luncheon on Wednesday, Mar. 3, will catch the Bison just before they head to the Patriot League Tournament in Upper Marlboro, Md. on Mar. 5.
