LEWISBURG, Pa. - For the second time in a month, Greg Costello (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) was honored as the Patriot League's Male Track Athlete of the Week. On Saturday, Costello won the 5K race at Penn State's National Invitational in 14:28.59, the ninth-best all-time in Bucknell history and the fastest time since 1995.
With the speedy time, Costello beat the IC4A qualifying standard by over 20 seconds. The qualification was his second this season. On Jan. 17, also at Penn State, Costello finished fourth in the 3K race with a time of 8:18.97, beating the IC4A qualifying standard by almost 10 full seconds. He earned his first Patriot League accolade this season on Jan. 13, following a mile win at Bucknell's Gulden Relays in 4:19.03.
The award is the fourth for Bucknell's track and field squads this year. Noel Powell was named last week's men's field athlete of the week for his 23'9" long jump win at the Bucknell Octagonal, while Costello's first win was also the first on the men's side. On January 20, pole vaulter Melanie Buczko won the women's field award for her 12'5 ?" school-record pole vault which she broke again the following week.
The Bison will compete again this Saturday at the Rhode Island Invitational before two weekends of home meets. First, Bucknell will host its Winter Classic on Feb. 14, followed by the Patriot League Championships Feb. 20-22.
