Bucknell Tennis Opens First Day of Singles Matches at College of New Jersey

EWING, N.J. - The Bucknell tennis teams opened their spring season Friday at the College of New Jersey, taking on the Lions in a two-team tournament. Bucknell's eight men's and eight women's singles players will each play against two members of the College of New Jersey team, playing one match on Friday and one on Saturday, and finish up the weekend by playing two double matches each on Sunday.
Nick Denefrio had the first men's win of the evening, knocking off TCNJ's Ryan Carty, 6-2, 6-3. Gerald DiChiara supplied another win for the Bison with his 6-4, 6-4 defeat of Justin Cook, while Bucknell's Matt Pikus took his match in straight sets over Ken Tsui, 6-4, 6-3. Bucknell's Joe Menezes took his match with Corey Ball in a third-set tiebreak, 6-4, 4-6, (10-3). Asher Salam also defeated New Jersey's Bryan Hanley, 7-5, 6-2.
On the women's side, Rheanna Gaskin had the first win, beating Kristen Turturiello, 6-4, 6-2. Veronica Brown was knocked off by TCNJ's Kristen Klepacki in come-from-behind fashion, falling 3-6, 6-4, (12-10) with the third set in super-tiebreak format.
