No. 20 Bucknell Men's Water Polo Wins First Game at Southern Championships

PRINCETON, N.J. - Bucknell, which held on to its No. 20 ranking this week, opened play at the Southern Championships with a 10-4 victory over Washington & Jefferson Friday night in men's water polo.
The Bison, who are the fifth seed in the 12-team field, upended the fourth-seeded Presidents to improve to 14-11 this season. Washington & Jefferson dropped to 12-5 this year. The top four teams in the field following this weekend's play earn berths in the Eastern Championships, which will be held Nov. 13-14 at Kinney Natatorium.
After leading just 4-2 at halftime, Bucknell outscored the Presidents 6-2 in the second half, including 3-0 in the final quarter. Goalkeeper Trevor Mullins made 11 saves as the Bison held an opponent to less than five goals for the fifth time this season. He also registered a team-high two assists.
On the offensive side of the pool, six different players scored goals, but Jay Danforth and Jason Rechel led the way with three tallies apiece. Bradley Roslyn, Nick Ferring, Jared Gray and Josh Sunday, who earned his fifth start of the year with Aaron Platshon out due to injury, scored single goals. With the three scores Danforth moved into the team lead with 43 goals this season. He is just four goals shy of equaling his career high.
In addition to Mullins, seven other players were credited with one assist apiece as Bucknell had assists on nine of its 10 goals. Elliot Benoist, Bradley Roslyn, Kyle Roslyn, Sean Robinson, Ferring, Sunday and Joseph Metcalf all had assists.
The Bison will take on Johns Hopkins Saturday, Oct. 30, at 2:20 p.m. Later in the evening the Bison will face a yet to be determined opponent at either 5:50 p.m. or 7 p.m.
