LEWISBURG, Pa. - John Feinstein, best-selling sports author and one of the leading national advocates of Patriot League athletics, has accepted an invitation to be the keynote speaker at a special dinner this May celebrating the achievements of Bucknell student-athletes, director of athletics and recreation John Hardt announced today.
The formal dinner, entitled "Celebration of Bucknell Athletics: The Bison Scholar-Athlete", is slated for May 1 at 6 p.m. in Sojka Pavilion.
Feinstein wrote The Last Amateurs, a best-selling book that chronicled the 1999-2000 Patriot League men's basketball season along with firsthand looks at the true scholar-athletes that competed in the league at that time. Feinstein has written numerous other books, including A Season on the Brink, A Civil War and several critically acclaimed golf books, including his most recent, Open: Inside the Ropes at Bethpage Black.
Feinstein has also served as an analyst on Patriot League men's basketball television broadcasts.
Among the other distinguished invitees will be all of Bucknell's past Academic All-Americans, the members of the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame, current student-athletes and coaches and the members of the university's Board of Trustees. The dinner, which will take place just prior to the annual Chrysalis Ball, comes just several months after Bucknell was awarded the prestigious USA TODAY-NCAA Academic Achievement Award. Bucknell was honored for leading the nation with a perfect 100 percent graduation rate in the most recent NCAA study.
Bucknell also ranks third among all Division I institutions in total number of Academic All-Americans, with 107 since 1970, and the Bison annually lead the Patriot League in Academic Honor Roll selections. In addition, Bucknell has won the Patriot League Presidents' Cup, the league's all-sports trophy, six straight years and 10 of 13 overall.
