Bucknell Track and Field Competes in Gulden Relays

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell men's and women's track and field teams held their second competition of the 2003-04 season on Saturday in the Gulden Relays. Athletes from Bowie State, Kutztown, Lehigh, McDaniel, Mt. St. Mary's, and Wagner visited Lewisburg to compete in the non-team scoring event. The race is named in honor of the late 31-year Bucknell head coach Art Gulden, who passed away in May 2001.
On a day where Bison athletes expected to bring home points for Bucknell in scoring competitions set personal records, Bucknell athletes also won three relay events as well as the mile run. Bucknell took the shuttle hurdle relay in 32.72 seconds, the 4x800 relay in 7:56.19, and the Distance Medley Relay in 10:45.01. Greg Costello won the mile race in 4:19.03 in a Bucknell-dominated event, as Bison athletes finished in four of the top five spots.
Junior quad-captain Mike Mellas set a personal record in the long jump, leaping 22' 1 ?", good for third place, while freshman Nick Novotny finished fifth by jumping 21' 4 ?". Mellas also set his personal record in the 55-meter hurdles by finishing in 7.91 seconds in his trial race. Sophomore Dan Frake finished second in the weight throw by achieving his personal high of 40' 1 ?".
On the women's side, the Bison claimed six events and saw one Gerhard Fieldhouse mark equaled in the meet after it was set. Among the field events, Bison women claimed the weight throw with Maria Garcia's 50'3 ?" heave, the shot put with Majorie Grap's 42'7" throw, and the triple jump, with Ann Doty's 36'11 ?" leap. But one meet after freshman Melanie Buczko aired 12' 3 ?" on the pole vault for a Gerhard Fieldhouse and Bucknell record, Mandy Jenkins of Mt. St. Mary's equaled the mark. Bucknell's pole vaulters were in Reno, Nev. on Saturday at the Pole Vault Summit.
Bucknell also claimed the 55-meter hurdles, the 60-meter dash, and the mile run. Jamie Lilien finished the hurdle race in 8.58 seconds in the final after running 8.56 in the trials, while Tolu Fayanjuola won the 60-meter dash in 7.93 and Katie Pfeifer won the mile in 5:24.61.
Bucknell will set out on the road for the first time in the indoor track season when it heads to Penn State next Saturday for the Penn State Octagonal. The Bison will be home again on January 24 for the Bucknell Octagonal.
