Bucknell Women's Tennis Competes in West Virginia's Martha Thorn Invitational

Morgantown, W. Va. - Eight women's tennis athletes traveled to Morgantown, W. Va. this weekend to compete in the West Virginia University's Martha Thorn Invitational. Two athletes each were entered in four singles flights as well as two doubles flights. First- and second-round singles play as well as first-round doubles play occurred on Friday, and first-round play in the back draw as well as third-round singles play and second-round doubles play will continue on Saturday with the tournament wrapping up on Sunday.
In flight A, sophomore Veronica Brown defeated American's Ashley Retter 6-4, 6-0 in the first round before falling to Lana Khvalina of Maryland-Baltimore County 6-4, 6-7(5), (13-11).
Also in flight A, junior Tanya Sichko beat Kaitlin Russo of Loyola (Md.), 6-3, 6-2 in first-round play, but followed it up with a loss to Kristina Georgieva from American, 6-2, 7-6(4).
In flight B, following a first-round bye, sophomore Rheanna Gaskin beat West Liberty's Leanne McGhee 6-0, 6-1 in the second round and will play again tomorrow in the third round against Lyndsey Nott of Army.
Senior Samantha Berthod also received a first-round bye, but lost to Villanova's Leighann Reilly 7-5, 6-1 in the second round and will play Kara Metzger of Dayton tomorrow in the back draw.
In flight C, sophomore Chelsea Mills received a first-round bye and beat West Liberty's Rachel Burson in the second round, 6-1, 6-1. Mills will play Alexandra del Moral of Army tomorrow in the third round.
Sophomore Rebecca Kral got a first-round bye and fell to Hayley Hughes of Pittsburgh in the second round, 6-4, 6-2 and will play Jessica Liberatore of Loyola in the back draw tomorrow.
In flight D, freshman Kelly Porter received a first-round bye and fell to West Virginia's Emily Gray, 6-4, 6-2. She will play Claire Najour of Loyola tomorrow in the back draw.
Also in flight D, freshman Renee Clinton fell to Kate Cabanski of Dayton in the first round, 6-3, 4-6, (10-5). She will play Sydney Thornhill of West Virginia tomorrow in the back draw.
In doubles play, Brown and Sichko defeated Candice Carlin and Melissa Reed of Villanova, 8-6 but fell to Khvalina and Ale Pederguana of UMBC 8-3 in flight A matches, while Berthod and Gaskin defeated Courtney Flezzani and Erica Walter of Villanova, 8-6 in a flight B match. In the second round, Berthod and Gaskin defeated Becky Emmers and Emily Hughes of Pittsburgh, 8-4, and move on to play Aimee Lim and Elizabeth Anderson of UMBC.
Also in flight B, Mills and Kral fell to Jessie Rybacki and Kelly McAndrew of Villanova, 8-3, and fell again to Retter and Tessa Hollyn Taub of American, 8-3.
In flight C, Clinton and Porter fell to Cabanski and Megan Flynn of Dayton, 8-4. The Bucknell duo fell again to Najour and Kaitlin LaRocco of Loyola, 8-3.
