PRINCETON, N.J. - The Bucknell women's water polo team missed two costly penalty shots in the final two quarters, as Harvard defeated the Bison 8-5 at the ECAC Championship at Princeton on April 5. The Orange and Blue scored only twice in the final three quarters. BU defeated Harvard earlier in the season, 10-9.
Bucknell jumped out to a 3-2 lead after the first quarter, aided by the solid defense of senior goalkeeper Lindsay Chesterfield with six saves in the frame. The Crimson came back to tie the game at 3-3 at halftime, after holding BU scoreless in the second half.
Harvard led 7-5 in the fourth quarter when the Bison were awarded penalty strokes on two separate occasions that could have tied the game. The Crimson keeper came up big, stopping both free shots to maintain the three-goal lead. Harvard added an insurance goal late in the fourth quarter to come away with the 8-5 win.
Sophomore Larissa Brown scored Bucknell's only two goals of the second half, leading the team with the two tallies. Also scoring once were senior Katie Stahler, junior Kelly Hofstetter and sophomore Cody Keffer.
Chesterfield finished the game with 13 saves.
Bucknell falls to 10-11 overall. The Bison face 16th-ranked Hartwick at 7:00 p.m. this evening.
