Bucknell Women's Golf Claims 6th in First Big South Championship Appearance

SUNSET BEACH, N.C. - Bucknell's women's golf team saved its best team score for the final round and climbed up one spot to finish in sixth place in its first-ever showing at the Big South Championship, which wrapped up Tuesday at the par-72 Sea Trail Resort.
The Bison finished with a team composite of 339 after shooting 342 and 343 in the first two rounds. Bucknell had rested in seventh place after the completion of 18 and 36 holes, but the Herd leapfrogged Winthrop, which finished with a 357 on Tuesday. UNC Wilmington shot a sizzling 305 in the final round - the best of the tournament - and outdistanced runner-up Coastal Carolina by 33 strokes.
Bucknell senior Jess Hetrich, who was named to the Big South All-Academic Team on Monday night, carded a team-best 82 in the final round. The Whitehall, Pa., native tied for 24th overall with a three-round total of 251. Freshman Kelly Evans was just a shot behind with an 83, her best effort of the tournament.
Senior Molly Campbell was Bucknell's lone top-20 finisher. Campbell shot 86 on Tuesday after opening with rounds of 81 and 83, and she finished in a four-way tie for 20th place.
Also for the Bison in the third round, sophomore Jaime Hays shot 88 and senior Amy Jones carded a 91.
Yunuen Sanchez of UNCW ran away with medallist honors after firing a two-under 70 on Tuesday. No other competitor shot better than 77 in the final round. Sanchez' 54-hole total of 221 was 13 strokes better than runner-up Julie St. Onge of Charleston Southern.
Bucknell wrapped up its first season as an associate member of the Big South Conference in the sport of women's golf. UNCW and Holy Cross are also associate members.
