LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell freshman guard Kevin Bettencourt (Peabody, Mass./Peabody) was selected as the Patriot League Rookie of the Week for the ninth time this season, adding to his league record total.
The odds-on favorite to capture Patriot League Rookie of the Year honors on Wednesday, Bettencourt last week broke the league record of seven rookie of the week citations, set last season by Nate Lufkin of Holy Cross. In their first 11 years in the Patriot League, the Bison had a total of nine rookies of the week, but Bettencourt has now matched that by himself in 2002-03.
Bettencourt totaled 23 points in two games last week - losses to Holy Cross (54-43) and Colgate (64-56). He did most of his damage from the free-throw line, where he made 12 of 16 attempts. The six made free throws in each game marked personal bests.
Bettencourt finished the regular season as the Patriot League's top rookie scorer, averaging 10.9 ppg. He scored in double digits in seven of the last nine games. His 58 3-pointers this season is tied for the 10th-highest single-season total in Bucknell history. Bettencourt's 295 points are the fifth-most ever by a Bison freshman.
Bucknell finished the regular season 13-14 overall, 7-7 in the Patriot League. The Bison will be the No. 5 seed at this weekend's Patriot League Tournament and face No. 4 Lehigh in the opening round Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
