LEWISBURG, Pa. - Visiting St. Francis (Pa.) struck early in the opening game to come away with the 6-1 victory, while the Red Flash came from behind to beat Bucknell 3-1 in the nightcap in softball action on Thursday, March 27. The Bison held a 1-0 lead in the second game until the fourth inning.
In the opener, St. Francis (Pa.) got two runs in the first inning, capitalizing on a leadoff double by Stacy Scofield. Brittany Shephard singled Scofield home for the first run of the inning, before Kate Lancaster scored on Lea Chernisky's fielder's choice. The Red Flash added another run in the top of the second to take a quick 3-0 lead.
St. Francis (Pa.) really did its damage in the fifth inning, scoring three runs on two hits and taking advantage of one Bucknell error in the frame. Chernisky delivered a bases loaded double, before Cassie Scofield scored on an error to make it a 6-0 ball game.
Stacy Scofield, who was 1-for-4 in the contest, also pitched a gem for the Red Flash. The right-hander carried a no-hitter into the bottom of the sixth inning, but freshman Alyssa Schneebaum registered Bucknell's first hit of the game with a leadoff single to center field. Scofield got a double play ball on the next batter, and got Kristen Potts to pop out to first base to get out of the inning without giving up a run.
The Bison finally got to Scofield in the bottom of the seventh. Junior catcher Angie Stackhouse led off the frame with a single. Two outs later, senior short stop Meredith Gill delivered a double to left field that scored Stackhouse to break up the shutout. With runners on first and third after a wild pitch and a walk, Scofield got Lauren Box to go down swinging to end the game.
In the nightcap, it was the Orange and Blue striking first with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Gill reach based on an error, and Potts sacrificed her to second. Freshman first baseman Lauren Wible clubbed a two out double down the left field line to plate Gill and get the Bison on the board.
St. Francis (Pa.) tied the contest in their half of the fourth inning, scoring a run on Suzy Ernst's double to center field.
Both teams had base runners in the next two innings, but could not capitalize.
The Red Flash finally got to Bucknell again in the top of the seventh inning. Jordanna Riggi hit a one-out single to right center, and Siobhan Gerber followed with a single through the left side. One out and a wild pitch later, the runners were on first and second when Nikki DeNinno delivered a two-run single to left center to give the visitors a 3-1 lead.
Bucknell made its final at-bat interesting. Schneebaum led off with a single, followed by a Jenny Ross single down the right field line. The next two batters reached base on fielder's choice, and St. Francis (Pa.) alertly got the lead runner out both times. SFU pitcher Brittany Shephard ended the threat with a strikeout for the 3-1 win.
Bucknell falls to 2-16 overall. The Bison start Patriot League play on Saturday, March 29, at Holy Cross at 11:00 a.m. St. Francis (Pa.) improves to 3-17 overall.
