PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. - After hitting his sixth double of the season, junior Brian Day scored the first run for the Bison in the fifth inning on a double hit by teammate Kyle Walter. The Bison scored two runs in the top of the fifth frame, however it was not enough to overcome the four runs the Wildcats had earned in the fourth inning. Bucknell dropped a 4-2 decision to Villanova at the Villanova Ballpark at Plymouth. The game was called after the top of the seventh due to rain.
The Bison (8-5) and the Wildcats (6-11) battled it out for three complete innings before scoring. The Bison tallied one hit in the first inning and the Wildcats had one hit in the third inning. In the fourth, Villanova scored its first run after lead-off hitter Danny Poydenis tripled to right center. Wildcat Adrian Schau singled to left field and Poydenis scored to give Villanova a 1-0 lead. The Wildcats grabbed three more runs on three hits to take the lead, 4-0.
The Orange and Blue fought back in the top of the fifth when Day doubled, and Walter followed with another double to score Day. Austin Barrett drove a single up the middle and earned an RBI when Walter scored, cutting the Wildcat lead in half.
Neither team could grab another hit until the seventh inning when Barrett hit another single up the middle, but he was stranded. At the plate, Barrett led the Bison going 2-for-3 with two singles and one RBI. Also earning hits were Ben Stoll, Day and Walter.
Taking the loss on the mound for the Bison was Tim Peacock (0-1). Peacock gave up four runs (three earned) on five hits in six innings, striking out six and walking one. Left-handed James Baxter (1-1) earned the win in Wednesday's match-up, while tallying 10 strike-outs. Lefty Mike Ciccotelli took over for Baxter at the top of the seventh and earned his second save of the season.
Bucknell will begin Patriot League play with a four-game series this weekend, March 29-30, against Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass.
