Bison Baseball Improve Their Winning Streak to Four With Wins Over Lock Haven

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell baseball team improved their winning streak to four games, after grabbing 9-3 and 10-1 wins over Lock Haven on Sunday. Highlighting the afternoon was freshman Chris Grandizio belting a home run over left field. The Bison improve their record to 8-4.
In the first game of the two-game series, the Bison started scoring in the third inning when Ben Stoll hit a single through the left side. Sam Moss moved Stoll with a sacrifice bunt, and then Stoll advanced by stealing third. Pete Wolf made a sacrifice bunt, but gained a base on an error. Stoll scored on the bunt. Wolf scored from second on a single hit by Ben Krentzman.
In the fifth inning, Bucknell added three runs to advance their lead to 5-0. All nine batters had a showing at the plate. LHU's Heath Repard walked Moss. Moss then advanced to second and then proceeded home on the throw. The Orange and Blue had two outs when Brian Day stepped up to bat and got on base via an error by the second baseman. Day then stole second, and Krentzman singled through the right side. Freshman Kyle Walter tripled into deep center field, plating Day and Krentzman. Austin Barrett and B.J. Batterson walked before the third out was captured.
Lock Haven scored their only three runs in the sixth inning. After two LHU players were hit by pitches, head coach Gene Depew replaced Zach Allen with Matt Daley, with one out.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Orange and Blue widened their scoring lead to 9-3. Lock Haven pulled Repard from the mound, replacing him with Ken Janiszewski. The new pitcher walked both Moss and Wolf, before being replaced with Joel Stoneberg. The Bison finished the inning with four runs on three hits, leaving two players on base. Moss, Wolf, Hirschberg, and Day scored for Bucknell. Hirschberg, Walter and Barrett each marked a single.
Daley struck out three Bald Eagles, allowing only one hit in the seventh inning. Daley struck out five LHU players, and allowed only two hits in 1.2 innings. Allen pitched 5.1 innings, giving up three runs on three hits. Allen struck out six batters. Walter received team high four runs batted in.
In the second game of the series, Bucknell began scoring early in the first inning. Matt Capese was hit by pitch in the first throw of the game. He advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Moss and moved to third on a hit by Wolf. Capece scored the lone run in the first on a wild pitch by LHU's pitcher, Matt Pile.
The Herd expanded their lead in the second inning, with three runs scored. Walter, Stoll and Phil Bunting crossed the plate. The Bald Eagles replaced Pile with Cody Caris who tracked all three outs in the second and one in the third. Caris was then replaced with Andy Leakey in the third. In the top of the fourth the Bald Eagles scored their lone run of the game on two errors by Walter. The Bison entered the bottom of the fourth with a score of 4-1 and left with an added run by Moss, after he doubled into right center. Day brought Moss home with a single to right center.
Stoll started the fifth inning with a single to right center and then stole second. With one out, Grandizio stepped up to bat and belted a home run into far left field, improving the score to 7-1. Capece and Moss walked and scored on a single hit by Day.
In the top of the sixth, Kevin Burns was replaced with Cory Nadler on the mound. Burns pitched five innings, giving up two hits and one run. Nadler pitched one inning giving up only one hit and striking out one. In the bottom of the sixth, LHU retired Leakey and brought in Mike Frederick to pitch. Steve Stutzman pinch hit for Bunting and got on base via four balls. He advanced to second on a pass ball and then to third on a wild pitch. Stutzman scored on a sacrifice hit to center field by Grandizio.
Freshman Phil Futrick was placed on the mound in the top of the seventh, and along with the defense knocked three down to close the game.
The Bison will travel to Villanova, Pa. to play the Wildcats on Wednesday, March 26. The single game is scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
