LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell freshman Kevin Bettencourt (Peabody, Mass./Peabody H.S.) won another Patriot League Rookie of the Week honor on Monday, giving him a pile of certificates that is nearing record proportion.
Bettencourt has now captured four straight rookie of the week honors and six overall this season. Last year, Nate Lufkin of Holy Cross set league records by winning seven total rookie awards and five in succession.
In two games over the weekend, Bettencourt tallied 21 points and six rebounds. He scored 11 points and contributed to a terrific defensive effort in Bucknell's impressive 62-42 road victory over Colgate on Friday. Two days later, in front of nearly 100 friends and family that traveled to Worcester, Mass., from his nearby hometown in Peabody, Bettencourt logged 10 points - all in the first half - in a 69-47 loss to Holy Cross.
Bettencourt, whose older brother Teddy played at Holy Cross in the mid-1990s, is the Patriot League's top rookie scorer at 10.2 ppg. He has scored in double figures in 10 of 20 games this season and ranks third on the Bison with 36 assists.
At the midway point of the Patriot League schedule, the Bison stand at 10-10 overall and 4-3 in conference play. Bucknell is tied for third place in the loop heading into Saturday's league contest at American.
