Bison Men's Indoor Track & Field Earn Third-Place Honors at PL Championships

HAMILTON, N.Y. - Bucknell men's indoor track and field team captured a third place mark in the 2003 Patriot League Championships. The Bison men earned 51 points on day three, which was 11 points less than what was needed for a second place honor. Runner-up Lafayette earned 109 points.
The Bison preceded American (69), Lehigh (61), Colgate (56), Holy Cross (21) and Navy (14).
The Distant Medley Relay team placed second with a time of 10:14.70. The Bison' 4x400-meter relay team finished in 3:25.21 for a third-place finish. Senior Bryan Johnston ran the 3,000-meter in 8:28.10 for a silver medal.
In the 200-meter dash, Ryan Newberger captured a bronze with a time of 22.22, and Noel Powell followed placing fourth (22.24). With a time of 1:54.47, Lou Palma received the bronze medal in the 800-meter run.
Eric Furst (2:31.05) earned third-place honors, while John Trotta (2:32.24) followed for a fifth place finish in the 1,000-meter event. Furst ran the mile in 4:14.70 (4th) and Palma finished behind Furst clocking in at 4:14.86 (5th).
In the 500-meter run, Brian Klotz crossed the line at 1:06.79 (5th). Richard Alexander ran the 55-meter high hurdles in 7.94 for a sixth place finish. In the men's triple jump, Mike Mellas jumped 45'7" (5th).
It's been nine years (1994) since the Bison men have placed lower than second at the Patriot League Championships. Bucknell will prepare for the upcoming IC4A's Championships in Boston, Mass., March 8-9.
