LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell senior Bryan Johnston (Kane, Pa./Kane Area) was selected by the Patriot League sports information directors as the 2002 Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for Men's Cross Country. He is the seventh Bison to receive this honor, but the first since the 2000 campaign.
The senior is a management major with a 3.58 grade-point average. Johnston is a seven-time member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, including four appearances during the cross country season. Throughout his career at Bucknell, Johnston has acquired a 3.5 GPA or higher to earn Dean's List honors for five semesters.
On the course, Johnston was the men's individual champion at the 2002 Patriot League Cross Country Championship en route to being named the Men's Runner of the Meet. His time of 25:43.18 was more than eight seconds faster than runner-up Matt Seymour of American. During the regular-season, Johnston was Bucknell's top runner in five of the seven races in which he competed. The senior's best outing this season was a time of 25:02 at the Gulden Relays, a race in which he was named the Most Valuable Male Runner.
The two-time all-league performer was named the Patriot League Runner of the Week on Oct. 7 and was Bucknell's Bull Run Inn Bison Athlete of the Week for the week ending on Nov. 3. Johnston was also honored by his coaches as the Most Valuable Runner of 2002.
Johnston joins Chris Priestaf (1994), Terry Shea (1995), Matt Kodak (1996, 1997, 1998) and Kevin Weatherill (2000) on the list of Bucknell runners to win the Men's Cross Country Scholar-Athlete award. Johnston's selection brings Bucknell's scholar-athlete total to 89, the most of any school since the league's inception as an all-sport conference in 1990-91.
A scholar-athlete nominee must have at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA and be a starter or key player in his/her sport. The winners are selected in a vote of the League's sports information directors.
