LEWISBURG, Pa. - Basketball's Lindsey Hollobaugh (Loganton, Pa./Central Mountain), swimming's Meghan Freese (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock), and field hockey's Callista Costopoulos (Shermans Dale, Pa./West Perry) were selected by their respective teams as Athletes of the Month at the Women's Sports Luncheon sponsored by K.I.C.K.S. Self-Defense for Women and Curves Fitness for Women. The luncheon, held on the first Thursday of every month at Bucknell's Langone Center, updates the Bucknell community on the previous month's performances and previews competitions to come.
Hollobaugh, one of two freshmen receiving honors at the luncheon, debuted with a bang at West Virginia on Nov. 21 for the women's basketball team, becoming only the third freshman in Bucknell history to debut by scoring 20 points in her first game, a 77-57 shortcoming by the Bison to the Mountaineers. The shooting guard has been in double figures in each of Bucknell's four games so far, scoring 10 in a loss to Loyola (Md.), 10 in a win over Coppin State, and 13 last night in a loss to Bowling Green. She leads the team in minutes, with 38.8 per game, and three-pointers, with five out of 10 attempted. Hollobaugh ranks second on the team to senior Desire Almind in shooting percentage (.490), free throws made, with a perfect nine-for-nine, rebounds, with 6.2, and points per game, with 15.5. Her three-point accuracy is best in the Patriot League, free-throw percentage tied for the best, while her scoring average is fifth, and her rebounding average, field goal percentage, and assist average (3.25) are 10th. The Bison (1-3) will look for their second and third wins of the season this weekend at the Cornell Classic, first against Cornell tomorrow at 7 p.m. and on Saturday evening against either James Madison or Winthrop.
Costopoulos, another freshman, scored three goals as a midfielder for the field hockey team, including Bucknell's lone goal in the semifinal of the Patriot League Tournament against Holy Cross on Nov. 7 in a 2-1 overtime loss. She assumed the penalty corner shooting duties mid-season, from which she scored her two other goals against Georgetown in a 4-2 win on Oct. 18. Costopoulos was one of only two freshmen, along with Alex Kyzmir, to see regular playing time on a team that had 11 newcomers. The field hockey team finished its season with the Holy Cross defeat, compiling a 9-8 overall record and 3-3 in the Patriot League.
Freese, a senior, has only competed in Bucknell's three meets in November, but has picked up two Patriot League Female Swimmer of the Week honors already this season. She earned her first one following the Bucknell Sprint Invitational, where she won three of her four individual events, including the 50-yard backstroke, 50-yard freestyle, and 100-yard freestyle, as well as the 200- and 400-yard medley relays. The next week, at Navy and American, she won both the 50-free and 100-free, as well as the 200-free and 200-medley relays. The following week at Army, Freese had a rare second-place finish in the 50-free and the 400-free relay while winning the 100-free for her third-consecutive meet this season. This week, the Bison will take a break from their 3-0 Patriot League dual meet schedule, hosting the Bucknell Trials/Finals Invitational with New Hampshire, Fordham, LaSalle, and Delaware. Preliminary competition will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, with diving preliminaries at 12:30 p.m. both days and final competition at 5 p.m. both days.
The next K.I.C.K.S. and Curves luncheon will be held on Thursday, February 5, in the Langone Center's Terrace Room, skipping January's first Thursday due to winter break.
