Bucknell Men's and Women's Swimming Split with Navy and American

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Bucknell women's swimming team defeated Navy, 156-144, and got past American, 220.5-72.5, but the Bucknell men's team finished third at the Patriot League season-opening tri-meet at Annapolis, Md. Navy's men beat Bucknell's men 222-78, while American's men won 174-114.
The Bison women started out strong, winning the first event on the night. Lectie Altman, Jamie Flick, Mary Krakowski, and Meghan Freese, the reigning Patriot League women's swimmer of the week, won the 200 meter medley relay in a time of 2:00.35. The Bucknell men posted a third-place time in the same event, with Mark Kretzer, William Schilling, Peter Garvin, and Michael Willats finishing in 1:49.66.
In the next women's event, Bucknell posted another third-place finish, as Daniela Faas finished the 800 meter freestyle in 9:18.17, just ahead of Jackie Feinthel, Robin Gibson, and Amanda Dunlap. Faas finished in the medals again in the following event, the 200 meter freestyle, taking second in 2:10.87 while Carlyn Donley and Laura Goeller finished third and fourth, respectively. Altman finished second in the fourth women's event on the night, completing the 100 meter backstroke in 1:06.08. Jamie Flick posted another second-place finish in the 100 meter breaststroke, finishing in 1:14.54.
Schilling posted the next medal finish for Bucknell, finishing second in the 100 meter breaststroke in 1:06.81, while Nikki Woodward matched the place in the 200 meter butterfly in 2:28.24.
Freese won two consecutive freestyle events just before the halfway point of the meet, taking the 50 meter free in 26.79 and the 100 free in 58.98. Rebecca Scheffter took third in the latter event. Bucknell scored another win when Altman won the 200 meter back in 2:21.26, ahead of Goeller's second-place finish. The Bison followed it up by winning the next women's event, the 200 meter back, when Jamie Flick finished in 2:43.18. Following a second-third showing by Bucknell's Faas and Altman in the 400 meter free, and Krakowski and Lauren Reed in the 100 meter fly, the Bison men got back into the top three when Kretzer took third in the 100 meter fly, finishing in 1:00.06. The Bucknell women followed with another second-third finish, by Goeller and Woodward in the 200 meter IM.
The tri-meet closed with relay and diving events. Bucknell's women won the 200 meter free relay, with the team of Scheffter, Krakowski, Goeller, and Freese finishing in 1:49.25. The Bison men took second in the same event, as Willats, Garvin, Jake Thieman, and Ian Rawhausser finished in 1:35.91. Bucknell's men took second in both diving events, as Jake Thompson piled up 227.02 points in the one-meter competition, while Joseph Duncan earned 229.35 points in the three-meter event. Sarah Petcavage was Bucknell's only top-three finisher in either event on the women's side, earning 215.25 exhibition points in the three-meter event.
The Bison will be on the road again next Saturday afternoon at Army, continuing the league schedule.
