Bucknell Men's Water Polo Secures Spot in Eastern's With Win Over Grove City

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Junior Jay Danforth scored two of his game-high three goals in the opening quarter as the Bucknell men's water polo team built a 7-0 lead after one and never looked back on the way to a 14-2 victory over Grove City at the Southern Division Championship on Saturday, November 1. With the win, the Bison secured a spot in the upcoming Eastern Championship at Navy.
In addition to Danforth, sophomore Lars Weborg also tallied twice in the frame, and juniors Nick Ferring and Aaron Platshon, and sophomore Bradley Roslyn each added one. The middle periods were a bit more evenly matched as BU only outscored the Wolverines 2-1 in both, but the early deficit was too much to overcome. The Bison defense held Grove City without a score again in the fourth, while tacking on three more of their own for the 14-2 final.
Danforth not only had a solid game offensively, finishing with three goals and two assists, but the defensive specialist also tied for the team lead with five steals. Sophomore Brad Unroe also registered five thefts, while handing out two assists.
Freshman Michael McManigal played the entire game in goal, making four saves while only allowing the two goals.
Bucknell improves to 8-17 overall. The Orange and Blue face 11th-ranked Princeton at 8:10 p.m. Saturday night for a chance to advance to the championship game. The top four teams move on to Eastern's, and despite the outcome of BU's contest against Princeton, the squad will finish among the top four. Grove City falls to 9-19 overall.
