Five Bison Honored as Student-Athletes of the Month at Women's Sports Luncheon

Lewisburg, Pa. - Field hockey player Jenni Turner (West Chester, Pa./Henderson), volleyball player Brandi Trapasso (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda), soccer player Samantha Hecht (Pompano Beach, Fla./Douglas), and cross country athletes Leanna Nastase (Beaverdale, Pa./Forest Hills) and Jennifer Stevens (Laceyville, Pa./Wyalusing Valley) were honored this afternoon as the athletes of the month for their sports at the Bucknell Women's Sports Luncheon, sponsored by Curves Fitness for Women and K.I.C.K.S. Self-Defense for Women.
Turner, a junior midfielder, was seletcted by her teammates as field hockey's athlete of the month, Head Coach Heather Lewis announced. The junior was selected for her outstanding work ethic, a practice that has evidently caught on among her teammates as the Bison are 6-1 for the first time in nearly three decades. Turner has started all seven games, and scored at UMBC on Sept. 23 in a 4-0 win. She and her teammates had a huge Patriot League win over rival Lafayette, 3-2 last Saturday, in addition to a 6-2 win over St. Francis (Pa.) on Tuesday. The team begins a four-match road swing on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Lehigh.
Hecht, a sophomore goalkeeper, was announced by Head Coach Chrissy Findlay as women's soccer's athlete of the month. The Bison are 4-3-1, and Hecht has started all seven games in which she has played. Hecht has 29 saves for a .763 save percentage, with a goals-against average of 1.34 per game.
Trapasso, a senior outside hitter and tri-captain, was selected as volleyball's athlete of the month, Head Coach Cindy Opalski announced. The Bison are 6-8 after opening Patriot League play 2-0 last weekend by beating Army and Holy Cross at home. Trapasso is second on the team in kills with 156, and is also second on the team in digs with 184. The Bison will have their fourth home weekend in a row on Friday and Saturday when they play Lehigh and Lafayette, respectively.
Cross country athletes Nastase and Stevens were honored for their performances in the University of Detroit Mercy Invitational on September 6 and the Iona Meet of Champions on September 27, Head Coach Kevin Donner announced. Nastase finished fourth overall and first among Bucknell athletes in Detroit, and Stevens finished fifth overall, less than a second behind Nastase. For her efforts, Nastase was named the Patriot League Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week. At Iona, Stevens finished 60th overall with Bucknell's top time, and Nastase was one second behind. The Bison will run again on Friday in their only home meet of the year, the Gulden Invitational.
The next Curves and K.I.C.K.S. Women's Sports Luncheon will be on November 6, where athletes will be honored for their October performances.
