Bucknell Men's Water Polo Opens Season with Two Lossed to Nationally Ranked Teams

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Bucknell men's water polo team faced a tough season-opening schedule, facing two nationally ranked teams on Saturday, September 7, at the Navy Open. The Bison fell, 16-3, to sixth-ranked Long Beach State, and dropped a 17-5 decision to #12 Queens.
Against Long Beach State, senior Chris Saxton (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) led the way with two goals, while junior Scott Afzal (Ellicott City, Md./McDonogh School) scored Bucknell's only other goal. Afzal was also credited with an assist in the contest. Also recording assists in the season-opener were sophomore Aaron Platshon (Menlo Park, Calif./Menlo Park) and freshman Bradley Roslyn (Philadelphia, Pa./William Penn Charter School).
Sophomore Ernest Martin (Winchester, Calif./Perris), making only his second career start, recorded four saves, while allowing eight scores. Freshman Trevor Mullins (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) played the second half in net, recording five saves.
In the Queens contest, junior Jamie Saettele (St. Louis, Mo./Ladue Horton Watkins) led Bucknell's offense with two goals and an assist. Also scoring were Saxton, Roslyn and sophomore James Danforth (Los Altos, Calif./Los Altos) with one goal each. Senior Adam Yerkes (Orlando, Fla./Winter Park) recorded two assists and Afzal added one.
Martin recorded two saves through two periods of work. Mullins registered four stops in the second half of action.
Bucknell falls to 0-2 to open the 2002 campaign. The Bison will face 18th-ranked St. Francis (N.Y.) on Sunday, September 8, at 11:15 a.m., before taking on MIT, the sixth-ranked team in Division III, at 2:45 p.m.
