LEWISBURG, Pa. - Mario Wilson, most recently the first assistant for Saint Francis University of Pa., has joined the Bucknell track and field staff as an assistant coach, head coach Kevin Donner recently announced.
"I am very excited to have Mario Wilson as a part of our staff here at Bucknell," said Donner. "During the past four years, Mario has personally coached a number of athletes who have won Conference Championships in individual events and scored at the ECAC-IC4A Championships. He has really grown and matured into one of the finest young coaches on the east coast."
Wilson, who will work with the Bucknell jumpers, is a 1998 graduate of Marist College and is working on his Master of Education at the present time. He made his coaching debut in 1998 at Holy Cross high school as the Head Track and Field Coach before moving to Saint Francis.
As assistant coach for the Red Flash, Wilson amassed four years of Division I track and field coaching experience. Three out of the four years at the Loretto, Pa. school, Wilson worked under the experience of Donner in the track and field program. He was in charge of training all the athletes in the sprinting, hurdling, throwing, and jumping events. Wilson also partook in supervising strength training for the athletes and monitoring academic progress. During his four years at Saint Francis, he had attained USATF Level I and II Certification, with specialties in the jumping and throwing events.
While coaching the Red Flash, Wilson assisted in two male Triple Crown Northeast Conference Championships. He also assisted with one NCAA Provisional qualifier in javelin, 12 IC4A qualifiers in javelin, triple jump, high jump, shot put and weight, and six ECAC qualifiers in javelin, high jump and 100 hurdles. Wilson also worked with four All IC4A Performers, two ECAC Performers, and four Northeast Conference Record Holders.
Wilson, who has a Bachelor of Arts from Marist, is currently working on his Master of Education and Bachelor of Arts minor in math from Saint Francis. During his tenure with the Red Flash, he also taught undergraduate courses within the discipline of mathematics.
The Bucknell men's and women's track and field team opens its indoor season on December 7, hosting the Bucknell Opener.
