LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell University women's golf standout Jess Hetrich has been named to the 2001-02 NCAA Division I All-Independent Second Team, it was announced Thursday evening.
The All-Independent teams are voted upon by women's golf coaches and sports information directors from the 17 NCAA Division I women's golf programs that compete as independents not affiliated with a conference or league. Those 17 schools include Augusta State, Birmingham-Southern, Bucknell, Butler, Centenary of Louisiana, Cleveland State, Dayton, Gardner-Webb, Georgetown (D.C.), Holy Cross, Lipscomb, Miami (Fla.), Morris Brown, Notre Dame, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Texas-Pan American and Xavier.
Hetrich enjoyed the most successful season of her collegiate career in 2001-02. During the fall season, she led the Bison with an 81.1-stroke average for an 18-hole round. The junior was the team's top golfer in eight of 15 rounds, and shot a season-low 77 at the Yale Invitational, as she tied the school record for 18 holes. Hetrich's top performance of the season may have taken place at the ECAC Championship, where she finished eighth among 122 competitors with a 159 (78-81) to lead Bucknell to a fifth-place team finish among 23 schools.
Equally impressive during the spring, Hetrich averaged 83.4 strokes per 18 holes over eight rounds. She was the team's top finisher five times, and she tied her own school record with another 77 at the William & Mary Invitational. Hetrich also picked up her first collegiate individual title during the spring, when she placed first at the Bucknell Invitational with a 160 (80-80) to pace Bucknell to a second-place finish in the team standings.
The University of Miami (Fla.) grabbed three out four All-Independent honors. Camilla Hilland was named as the Player of the Year, while Tina Miller garnered Freshman of the Year status. The Hurricanes' Lela Cannon received Coach of the Year honors, while Melissa Mason of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi was voted as the Newcomer of the Year.
Named to the All-Independent First Team were Hilland, Miller, Karen Lotta (Notre Dame), Laura McCaslin (Birmingham-Southern) and Melissa Newman-Gillespie (Texas A&M-Corpus Christi).
