LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell women's water polo team, in its fourth year as a varsity sport, concluded its 2002 season with a team banquet held earlier this month. Nine members of the team were the recipients of eight different awards, presented by head coach John Zeigler.
Senior co-captain Adrienne Schober (Landisville, Pa./Clearlake) received the Allyson Gillespie Award. The award recognizes "demonstrated leadership, loyalty, and total dedication to Bucknell women's water polo" and was established in honor of former player, captain and coach of the club team, and 1996 graduate of Bucknell. A member of the all-conference team and the all-academic teams throughout her career, Schober led the team in assists this season with 29. The driver accumulated 142 career assists and 257 career points, both Bucknell school records.
Zeigler presented the Vicki Gorman Award to Bison co-captain, Brooke Rea (Canandaigua, N.Y./Los Altos). The award was named after Gorman, a 1993 Bucknell graduate and former club player. Gorman was the first Bison to represent BU as a member of the U.S. National Team. A senior, Rea holds the Bucknell record for goals in a career, ending her tenure at BU with 161 scores and 69 assists. With 230 career points, Rea, a Southern Division All-Conference Second-Team selection this season, ends her career in second place on the career points list. Her assist total ranks third in the Bison career annals.
In honor of the inaugural varsity season, The Class of '99 Award was established in recognition of the first graduating class of women's water polo players whose "perseverance and dedication led to the establishment of the program" at Bucknell. This year the award was given to junior Lindsay Chesterfield (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West). The starting goalkeeper the past two years, Chesterfield has already broken the career saves record with 657. In addition, she broke her own single-season saves record with 307 this year, passing her mark of 267 set a year ago.
This season, Zeigler presented the Most Improved Award to senior Meredith Stevens (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) and freshman Ashley Aiken (San Ramon, Calif./California). Stevens, a defensive specialist throughout her four years, had an impressive senior campaign. A starter in six contests, she registered a career-best 31 steals this season, while also contributing on offense with two goals and 11 assists. Aiken broke onto the scene as a rookie, earning a start in one of the 23 games she played in. A driver, Aiken recorded six goals and 13 assists, while also grabbing 20 steals in her inaugural season. She pulled in a career-high seven steals in a contest this year.
A new award this season is the Lynn Kachmarik Award, replacing The Coach's Award. The award is presented for "unwavering commitment and a selfless generosity to her teammates," and is named after former women's water polo, and swimming and diving coach Lynn Kachmarik. Kachmarik was the head coach for the Bucknell women's water polo team in its first season as a varsity sport. The 2002 recipient of the award is freshman Eileen Ketterer (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Lyman). Ketterer earned the start in 30 of 33 games this season, becoming the squad's prime sprinter, winning 78.3% of the sprints she swam (83-106). In addition, she added 16 goals and tied for the team lead in assists with 29 for 45 points this year. Her season point total places her fifth on the Bucknell rookie-scoring list.
The 2002 Offensive Most Valuable Player Award was given to sophomore Kelly Hofstetter (Scotts Valley, Calif./Harbor), while freshman Katie Hartigan (Coronado, Calif./The Bishop's School) was the recipient of the Defensive Most Valuable Player Award, and freshman Cody Keffer (Berkeley, Calif./Berkeley) was tabbed the Rookie of the Year.
Hofstetter led the team with 61 goals scored this season, tying the Bucknell single-season record. She also handed out 17 assists to finish second on the squad with 78 points. In addition to her offensive prowess, Hofstetter was third on the team with 43 steals and recorded 10 ejections drawn.
Hartigan was a starter in 20 of Bucknell' 33 games this season, proving as a threat both defensively and offensively. On the defensive side, Hartigan finished the year with 33 steals and 11 ejections drawn. She proved her versatility, scoring 11 goals and assisting on 11 more for 22 points on the year.
Keffer made an immediate impact on the Bison program, leading the squad in points with 83. That season point total ranks third on the single-season list and is the best ever by a rookie. Keffer was second on the squad in both goals and assists, finishing the year with 55 and 28, respectively. A threat on both sides of the ball, the utility player led the team with 54 steals and finished second with 27 ejections drawn.
The 2002 women's water polo team finished the year with an overall record of 14-19 and a mark of 2-4 in the Southern Division Conference.
