Bison Track & Field Teams Excel at James Madison Invitational

HARRISONBURG, Va. - Freshman Danielle Brown came in first in the javelin, while sophomore Noel Powell garnered a pair of top-four finishes, leading the Bucknell track & field teams on day two of the non-scoring James Madison Invitational on Saturday.
Brown recorded a winning toss of 40.22 meters in the javelin and fell just two centimeters shy of the ECAC-qualifying standard. Erin Lee also participated in the javelin and finished third with a throw of 37.04 meters.
Other Bison who fared well in the field events were Maria Garcia and Gwendolyn Soult, who both finished among the top seven in the hammer throw. Garcia turned in a fourth-place showing (47.86 meters) while Soult came in seventh with a throw of 44.00 meters. Lee also competed in the hammer and with a heave of 44.58 meters placed sixth.
Rehana Lanewala, Amy Calvo, Nicki Piper and Theresa Dennis also posted impressive performances for Bucknell. Lanewala took 12th in the 400-meter dash in 58.12, while Calvo was 13th in the same event with a 58.17 clocking. Piper finished 26th in the 800-meter run in 2:17.65, and Dennis took third in her heat of the 3,000-meter run in 10:18.5.
Powell paced the men's team with stellar showings in the 200-meter dash and long jump. In the 200, Powell lowered his own school record by 0.14 seconds and placed third with a time of 21.34. He also came in fourth in the long jump with a mark of 24'6", just over two inches shy of another one of his school records.
Richard Alexander and Matt Solomon also gave the Bison a solid effort on the track. Alexander came in seventh in the 400-meter hurdles (57.84) and 16th in the 110 hurdles (15.62). Solomon recorded a personal-best time of 22.28 in the 200-meter dash.
In the field, Adam Jacob cleared 4.25 meters to place sixth in the pole vault.
Both teams return to championship action on May 17-19, when they travel to Princeton University for the ECAC/IC4A Championships.
