Bucknell Women's Crew Team Picks Up Two Gold Medals at Occoquan Sprints

FAIRFAX, Va. - Competing in their first regatta of the spring season, the Bucknell University men's and women's crew teams recorded solid showings at the Occoquan Sprints on Saturday, April 7 on the Occoquan Reservoir.
In the women's competition, the Bison won gold medals in both the varsity four and the varsity pair. The varsity four, consisting of Lisa Baranik, Julie Engel, Rebecca Newman, Jill Harrington and Nicole Tomlin, won their five-boat final and beat strong competition from La Salle and Pittsburgh, while the varsity pair of Emily Smith and Joan Wendler handily won over Pittsburgh.
The novice women's crews also were impressive. The second novice eight finished second to George Washington and beat William & Mary, Penn State, Mount St. Mary's and Pittsburgh in their six-boat final. That boat was comprised of Kyra Harris, Liz Ayerle, Laura Jacque, Candice Olszewski, Paola Grande, Charissa Reimer, Diana Scheerbaum, Jennifer Prunoske, and Emily Edwards.
Also competing in a six-boat final, the lightweight novice eight finished sixth while facing strong openweight competition from Loyola, Bryn Mawr, Villanova, and Virginia. Jaclyn Shull, Sarah Dickinson, Allison Buoncristiani, Lauren Donnelly, Jill Pompeii, Kelly Landis, Sarah Brennessel, Kristin Willner and Rachel Trusheim competed in that event.
The first novice eighth qualified for the final by finishing second to George Washington and ahead of St. Mary's, Pittsburgh and Maryland in their heat. That team - made up of Kyra Harris, Lauren Ewald, Meiko Nevels, Elizabeth Marut, Tracy Menkowski, Emily Frost, Vi Ngo, Jocelyn Dautel and Kara Schroepfer - finished sixth to Virginia, George Washington, Villanova, George Mason and Virginia Tech.
In the men's competition, Aaron Bates, Brian Albert, Steven Patak and Trevor Gibson finished second to Navy and ahead of Pittsburgh, Susquehanna, Carnegie Mellon and Maryland in their six boat final. The men's novice four finished first in their novice final, beating Susquehanna, Pittsburgh "B" and North Carolina State "B."
Bucknell also fielded a men's varsity lightweight, which took fourth behind Pittsburgh, Penn State and Carnegie Mellon and ahead of Richmond and Susquehanna.
Both teams return to action next Saturday when they compete in the Knecht Cup on the Cooper River in Camden, N.J.
