LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell junior attackman Dennis Geraghty (Kings Park, N.Y./St. Anthony's H.S.) and freshman attackman Chris Cara (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford H.S.) have been named the Patriot League's Offensive Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week, respectively, the league office announced Monday afternoon.
Both players enjoyed seven-point afternoons in Bucknell's 20-10 rout of Lehigh on Saturday that helped the Bison gain a share of the Patriot League title. Geraghty matched his career high with a half-dozen goals, while the seven-point output was the best of his career. Cara did equal damage to the Mountain Hawks, notching four goals and three assists as the Bison chalked up their highest scoring output in a game since 1999.
Geraghty, who also had a hat trick in Bucknell's 9-7 loss to 18th-ranked Penn State last Tuesday, finished the season with 34 goals. That total is tied for ninth on Bucknell's all-time single-season list. Geraghty scored at least three goals in 7 of 13 games this season, and he is the Patriot League's third-leading goal scorer in 2002.
Cara is the Patriot League's overall scoring leader with 56 points (4.31 per game) on 25 goals and 31 assists. His assist against Penn State was enough to break Bucknell's freshman scoring record, which was set by Pete VonHoffmann in 1976. The 56 points are not only the most ever by a Bison freshman, but it is the seventh-highest scoring output in school annals, and the highest in eight years. His 31 assists ranks tied for fifth on Bucknell's single-season list and tied for sixth on the Patriot League's single-season chart.
Cara was the league's Offensive Player of the Week twice previously this season. Bucknell totaled six weekly award winners this season, tied with Hobart for the most in the league.
Bucknell finished the season with a 6-7 overall record and a 5-1 Patriot League mark. The Bison are tied with Hobart for the league lead, although Army could make it a three-way tie with wins this week over Lafayette and Lehigh. In that scenario, the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament would be determined by the RPI rankings.
