PHILADELPHIA - A small batch of Bucknell's top track & field athletes took part in day one of the prestigious Penn Relays Thursday at the University of Pennsylvania's Franklin Field, and several tracksters came away with impressive individual performances.
Bryan Johnston and Chris Crowe turned in the highest finishes for the Bison. Johnston placed ninth out of 20 competitors in the Men's Olympic Development 3,000m steeplechase in 9:07.82, the 10th-fastest time in school history. Competing in the College Women's 3,000m steeplechase, Crowe placed ninth among 15 runners in 11:10.40, just two seconds off her own school record.
Greg Costello and Becki Marshall also finished highly in the distance events. Costello cruised to a 14:26.25 clocking and finished 22nd out of 31 runners in the College Men's 5,000m run. His time was a personal best and the 10th-best in school history. Marshall was the 17th runner in a 29-competitor field to cross the finish line in the Women's Olympic Development 5,000m run, and she completed the 3.1-mile race in a season-best time of 17:18.94.
Less than one week after breaking the school record, the women's 1,600m relay team of Amy Calvo, Rehana Lanewala, LaTonya McSwain and Stephanie Bango was back on the track for the Bison. The quartet teamed up to finish fifth in their heat of the College Women's 1,600m relay in a time of 3:49.38. Florida, which finished sixth in the event at last season's NCAA Championship, won the heat in 3:39.82. Cal State Northridge (3:40.41) finished second, followed by Georgetown (3:42.93) and Kent State (3:47.93). The Bison defeated South Florida (3:50.45), Mississippi (3:50.54) and Texas A&M (3:57.90).
Kristin Ferrell, Khadija Shariff and Edwina Bourn rounded out Bucknell's track contingent. Competing in the College Women's 3,000m run, Ferrell came in 28th in 10:13.82, the ninth-best mark in Bucknell history. Shariff and Bourn both participated in the College Women's 400m hurdles, and placed 54th (1:05.58) and 56th (1:05.80), respectively.
In the field events, Maria Garcia and Erin Lee were the Bison's lone representatives. Garcia finished 26th in the College Women's hammer throw with a toss of 159'10". Lee competed in the discus, but did not record a throw long enough to mark.
Bucknell will return to Franklin Field Friday afternoon for the men's 800m relay trials, men's long jump, men's distance medley relay and women's sprint medley relay.
