PHILADELPHIA - The varsity women's four continued its hot streak and paced the Bucknell men's and women's crew teams Saturday at the Murphy Cup, held on the Schuylkill River.
Sophomore Rebecca Newman, sophomore Julie Engel, junior Lisa Baranik, sophomore Jill Harrington and sophomore coxswain Nicole Tomlin teamed up to win by 4.3 seconds over Dowling College for its third gold medal is as many regattas. Villanova, La Salle, Pitt and Fordham followed. The boat's victory marked just the second time the varsity women's four has won the gold at the Murphy Cup. Over its last three regattas, the team is 17-0 against other boats.
The novice women's eight finished sixth out of 11 in a tough field. The novice women's second eight rowed a great race, sprinting past Villanova in the last 500 meters to win the gold.
The novice women's lightweight eight rowed against the varsity lightweight eight from Villanova, and finished only 17.7 seconds behind. The men's fours were highlighted by a third-place finish from the novice four, and a sixth of 13 finish for the varsity four.
On Sunday, the men's varsity fours and the women's varsity pair traveled to Penn State and scrimmaged over two 1,700-meter races. The women's varsity pair was victorious in both, winning the first by over a foot and the second by 100 feet. The men's varsity fours, after having difficulty matching Penn State's speed last weekend, closed the gap significantly, but not enough for the win.
The Bison continue their season with the Metropolitan Championships at the Orchard Beach Lagoon in New Rochelle, N.Y. on Saturday before visiting Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass. for the Patriot League Championships on Sunday.
