LEWISBURG, Pa. - Freshman quarterback Cole Ciesnolevicz completed 5-of-5 passes for 78 yards and a touchdown to lead the Orange team to a 20-6 victory over the Blue team in Bucknell's annual Spring Football Game Saturday at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium.
Not even a chilly rain could dampen the spirits of the Bison, who engaged in a fun, yet physical contest that signaled the end of the 2002 spring practice session. In the end, the Orange team put together three solid scoring drives - with all three quarterbacks involved in a touchdown -- and used suffocating defense to claim bragging rights for the rest of the offseason.
The Orange team received impressive performances from quarterbacks Todd Wenrich and Ciesnolevicz, the top two signal callers on the Bison depth chart. Wenrich attempted only five passes on the day, but completed three, including a 26-yard strike to Nisan Trotter that gave the Orange a 14-0 lead in the second quarter. Ciesnolevicz connected on all five of his tosses, the last a 10-yard TD pass to Evan Crawford on the last play of the third quarter that made it 20-0.
Ryan Colton, the third Orange quarterback, capped the initial scoring drive of the day with a 1-yard TD plunge in the opening quarter.
The Blue team's lone score came via a trick play in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Kyle Fields tossed a lateral pass to wideout Daris Wilson, who then lofted a perfect 11-yard strike to a wide-open Tim Johnson in the end zone.
Fields, the starting quarterback for the Blue, had a very impressive day, completing 9 of 14 passes for 133 yards. Reserves John Henry Jackson (5-7, 23 yards) and Devin Fitzsimmons (2-4, 22 yards) helped the Blue team combine for 189 yards passing on the day.
Wilson and Johnson, both from the Blue team, led all receivers with four catches on the day.
Freshman Raphael Darrington shook off a slow start to lead all rushers with 45 yards on 16 carries for Team Orange. Darrington gained 31 of his 45 yards in the second half and also caught two passes for 30 yards. Frank Lazio led the Blue unit with 30 rushing yards on 13 carries.
Defensively, the Orange team limited the Blue to only 24 rushing yards. Cornerback Jerome Acy was one of many stars on defense, registering five tackles, three pass breakups and a 31-yard fumble return. Safety Will Smith had a team-high six tackles, while freshman defensive tackle Corey Mayo had three tackles, all for loss, including two sacks. Cornerback Adam Minggia had the only interception of the game.
Linebacker Billy Windle and tackle Gary Carruthers led the Blue defense with six tackles apiece.
