EMMITSBURG, Md. - The Bucknell softball team could not overcome the momentum of Mount St. Mary's and their extra-inning win in the first game of the doubleheader and the Bison lost by eight runs in the nightcap to suffer the sweep.
In the opener, the Mount held Bucknell scoreless for the first four innings and took a 2-0 advantage in the bottom of the second. Nola Occhipinti doubled home Chloe Mathus and Val Petillo for the two-run advantage.
Bucknell tied the contest with two runs in the top of the fifth inning. Both teams were held scoreless over the next inning and half to force extra frames. Bucknell struck first, plating a single run in the top of the eighth. Sophomore Angela Stackhouse, on second due to the international tiebreak rule, scored on a one-out double by Meredith Gill. Mount starter, Allison Moraca, then worked out of a bases loaded jam to keep Bucknell's lead at just 3-2.
In the bottom of the inning, the Mount rallied with two outs. Amanda Blizzard walked and advanced to second on an infield single by Jen Sansevero. Mary Dillon came on to pinch run for Blizzard and scored the tying run on single by Moraca. Petillo followed with a single up the middle, plating Sansevero with the winning run.
Moraca, in her second consecutive outing in extra innings, threw a complete game. She surrendered three runs (two earned) on six hits and struck out five. Freshman Kelli Haskins (2-7) was pinned with the defeat for Bucknell. She went the distance, giving up four runs (two earned) on eight hits. Sansevero led the Mount with two hits and Gill had two for the visitors.
The Mount busted open a tie game with a six-run fourth inning in the nightcap. Entering the inning locked at one, the hosts put up six runs on four hits and two Bison errors. Petillo hit her first of three singles in the game to score Dillon with the first run, but the blow came on a two RBI double by Eileen Williams to put the Mount up 7-1 through four.
With two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Mount forced the game to be called due to the eight-run rule. Jen Emel led off the sixth with a triple and scored on a single by Williams. For the second time on the afternoon, Petillo finished the game with a run-scoring single. Williams came home with the Mount's ninth run and pushed their win streak to three games.
Erin Kummerfeldt picked up her fifth win of the season in 15 decisions. She tossed her 12th complete game and gave up just one earned run on four hits. Lauren Box fell to 4-7 as she went just three and a third innings giving up seven runs (three earned) on seven hits.
The Bison, 10-4 overall, will look to get back on the winning side with a Patriot League doubleheader against Colgate on Saturday, April 20. The first pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
