CAMDEN, N.J. - Led by the women's varsity four, the Bucknell University men's and women's crew teams were impressive on Saturday and Sunday at the Knecht Cup, held on the Cooper River.
For second consecutive week, the Bison women's varsity four recorded a gold-medal performance. The boat finished first among 24 crews, and became only the second women's varsity four to win a gold in Bucknell women's crew history at the Knecht Cup. In the six-boat final, sophomore Rebecca Newman, junior Julie Engel, junior Lisa Baranik and sophomore coxswain Nicole Tomlin won with a time of 7:39.8. The Bison defeated Kansas (7:45.1), West Virginia (7:45.9), Massachusetts (7:46.4), Dowling (7:53.4) and Penn State (8:03.2).
The women's varsity pair finished highly for the Bison as well. After winning the gold at the Occoquan Sprints last week, the duo of sophomores Emily Smith and Joan Wendler finished third in the final with a time of 8:42.1. The boat finished behind Massachusetts (8:13.4) and Penn State (8:34.9) but in front of NYU (8:48.4) and Iona (9:31.6).
The novice women's lightweight eight also performed at a high level, finishing with a time of 7:25.5 and second only to Princeton (7:11.3). Bucknell finished ahead of national power Wisconsin (7:31.0), nationally-ranked Villanova (7:39.8) and Georgetown (7:43.9), along with Penn State (8:34.6). That boat consisted of freshman coxswain Kyra Harris, freshman Lauren Ewald, freshman Meiko Nevels, freshman Sarah Dickinson, sophomore Vi Ngo, freshman Lauren Donnelly, freshman Jill Pompeii, freshman Kelly Landis and freshman Rachel Trusheim. On Sunday, the novice women's lightweight eight of Harris, Ewald, Nevels, Ngo, Donnelly, Pompeii, Landis, Trusheim and freshman Kristin Willner finished second to Princeton and ahead of Wisconsin for the second time.
The novice women's eight, second novice women's eight, novice men's four and varsity men's four also competed but did not advance past their heats.
Both teams pick up their schedule on Saturday with the Murphy Cup, contested on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia.
