Bucknell Women's Water Polo Competes in First Set of League Games This Season

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Bucknell women's water polo team competed in its first set of Collegiate Water Polo Association Southern Division games on Saturday, March 9, posting a 1-2 record on the day. The Bison opened competition with a 10-5 win over Villanova, before dropping their last two. BU fell 9-7 to George Washington and 19-4 to 15th-ranked Princeton.
Against Villanova, the two teams ended the first period in a 3-3 deadlock, before the Orange and Blue exploded for four goals in the second to take a 7-4 lead at halftime. Senior Brooke Rea (Canandaigua, N.Y./Los Altos) scored all four of her goals in the first half in helping the Bison to the lead at intermission. Bucknell added to its advantage with a score in the third period, while holding the Wildcats without a goal in the frame. Both teams tallied once in the fourth for BU to come away with the 10-5 victory.
Junior Lindsay Chesterfield (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) recorded 13 saves in the contest while allowing only five goals.
In the next game, Bucknell faced George Washington for the second time this season. The Colonials jumped out to an early 3-1 lead after the first period. The Bison came storming back with a 3-0 second period to tie the contest 4-4 at halftime. Both teams tallied twice in the third to enter the final frame in a 6-6 tie. George Washington broke the deadlock 1:45 into the final period, and the Colonials went on to build a 9-6 advantage before the Orange and Blue scored with 2:17 remaining in the game to create the final deficit of 9-7. Freshman Cody Keffer (Berkeley, Calif./Berkeley) led the squad with three goals and two assists in the loss.
Sophomore Kelly Hofstetter (Scotts Valley, Calif./Harbor) scored Bucknell's only goals in the 19-4 loss to nationally ranked Princeton.
The Orange and Blue fall to 4-6 overall and 1-2 in Southern Division competition. The Bison head to California for their annual spring break trip. The team will open play out West with a game at Pomona-Pitzer, ranked fourth in the latest Division III poll, on Tuesday, March 12. Game time is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
