LEWISBURG, Pa. - After leading his team to suffocating road victories over Mount St. Mary's and Holy Cross, Bucknell junior goaltender Justin Sussman (Baltimore, Md./Friends Academy) has been named the Patriot League Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week for the second straight week.
Sussman registered a miniscule 3.33 goals-against average and a stingy .833 save percentage last week. He made 16 saves in Bucknell's 5-3 win over Mount St. Mary's last Wednesday, keeping the Mount off the scoreboard for the game's final 30:57.
He extended his scoreless string to 37:27 before allowing a goal midway through the opening period of Saturday's 14-4 win over Holy Cross. Sussman allowed two goals and made nine saves before departing at halftime with the Bison in control, 9-2.
Since falling to 0-4 with a 16-6 loss to Maryland on March 12, the Bison have allowed only 12 goals in their next three games, all victories. It is Bucknell's stingiest three-game stretch since 1970.
Sussman, a Second Team All-Patriot League performer last season, lowered his season goals-against average to 8.32, while upping his save percentage to .646.
Bucknell is 3-4 overall, 2-0 in Patriot League play. The Bison have won 11 straight conference games dating back to the 2000 season.
Bucknell has a crucial Patriot League road test this Saturday at Hobart. The Bison can take control of the league title chase with a victory. Game time is 1 p.m. in Geneva, N.Y.
