EMMITSBURG, Md. - Senior Eric Fishman belted four hits, and sophomore Sam Moss poked his first career home run, leading Bucknell to a 4-1 non-league victory over Mount St. Mary's at a frigid Golibart Field.
Senior Sean Magee (2-1) started for the Bison and tossed five shutout innings for his second career victory. Magee held the Mount to four hits and no walks. He also struck out four. Reliever Ryan Collins took the loss for Mount St. Mary's to fall to 0-3.
Bucknell (6-12) broke open a scoreless ballgame in the fifth with a pair of runs off Collins, who replaced Mount starting pitcher Lynn Fuller in the top of the inning. With two outs, Collins hit Moss, the designated hitter, before Fishman ripped a single to right, moving Moss to third. Sophomore Pete Wolf followed with a two-run infield single. Moss scored from third on the hit, and a throwing error by the Mount St. Mary's first baseman allowed Fishman to come home from second.
Mount St. Mary's (3-14) cut the lead in half in the bottom of the sixth off Bucknell reliever Zach Allen. Third baseman Burt Stormes knocked in the only run of the game for the Mount when he reached on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded. Allen walked the next batter to load the bases again, but escaped from the inning by forcing the Mount's No. 8 hitter to fly out to end the inning.
The Bison padded their lead with two more runs in the top of the seventh when freshman Phil Bunting led off the frame with a double into left, and scored two batters later when Moss delivered the long ball, Bucknell's third of the season, to set the final score.
Seniors Blane Sharpless and Chris Lackett each fired one scoreless inning to set up senior Gregg Farmery in the bottom of the ninth. Farmery gave up two walks, but allowed neither runner to score to come away with his second save of the season and extend his scoreless inning streak to 14.
Bucknell pounded out a season-high 12 hits for the game, but left 10 runners on base. Mount St. Mary's stranded 13.
Fishman extended his hitting streak to 13 with his infield single in the top of the first. He also raised his team-leading batting average to .362.
Senior Larry Scheetz added a pair of hits for the Bison.
Bucknell picks up its schedule on Saturday, when it hosts Bloomsburg for a doubleheader beginning at noon.
