ORLANDO--On their fourth day of action at the Rebel Softball Classic Thurdsay morning, Bucknell rode the strong pitching performance of junior Brandi Porter on their way to a 4-0 victory over Indiana-Purdue-Fort Wayne. In game two, Lauren Box pitched very well but took the tough-luck loss as Bowling Green State came from behind for the 2-1 victory.
Game one remained scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when Bucknell would plate three runs to take a commanding lead. Lauren Titus's single in the first and Angela Stackhouse's single in the second would be the only Bison offense in the first three innings. However, IUPU-Fort Wayne would threaten to score in both the first and third innings, stranding two runners in each inning. Porter would strand two runners in scoring position in the first by striking out cleanup hitter Lori Faurote and inducing a flyout to left by Mindy Pomeroy.
Kelly Dugan led off the three-run fourth with a double, then Erin Doyle reached on an infield error. After two outs the Bucknell runners stood on second and third, and each runner advacned on a wild pitch by Pomeroy. A single by Jenna Demetriades scored Doyle, and after stealing second, Demetriades scored from second on an infield error by second baseman Tierni Green. Porter would cruise from there, allowing only two hits the rest of the way. Bucknell tacked on an insurance run in the sixth when Meredith Gill's double scored Demetriades.
Porter earned her first victory of the season with the shutout, striking out five and surrendering only five hits along the way. Demetriades led the Bison offense with a single, a walk, and two runs scored in three plate appearances. Angela Grabzcak added a double and a single for the losers.
On the back end of the doubleheader, Bucknell would strike first in their half of the sixth. Barb Wood earned a one-out walk and pinch runner Courtney Dohoney moved to second on a wild pitch. Dohoney moved to third after a groundout to second, then raced home on another wild pitch to put the Bison up 1-0.
Box held Bowling Green to just two singles over the first five innings. In the sixth, Renee Rosemeier's sacrifice fly plated Natalie Phillips, who had reached on an error and moved to third on Libby Voshell's double. With the score now knotted at one, Bucknell went quietly in their half of the seventh. In the bottom of the seventh, the first two Falcon batters reached base before Lauren Lennox singled to load the bases. Sam Moore followed with a single just inside the right field line to drive home Liz Tuza with the winning run.
Dugan singled twice to lead the Bucknell offense, which mustered only three hits off Bowling Green starter McKenna Houle. Box surrendered only five hits in seven innings, and both Falcon runs were unearned.
Bucknell takes a 2-6 record into their final day in Orlando Friday evening. Bucknell will face off against Wagner at 6:00 pm and Butler at 7:50 pm at the Osceola County Sports Complex.
