STATESBORO, Ga. - Bucknell posted its best defensive effort of the season, but came up on the short end of a 4-1 decision to Georgia Southern this afternoon in non-league baseball action at J.I. Clements Stadium.
With the win, Georgia Southern (4-5) competed a three-game sweep after winning 13-4 and 10-0 yesterday.
The Eagles' four runs scored were the least Bucknell (0-6) has given up in one game this season.
Georgia Southern starting pitcher Jared Comstock struck out eight, limited the Bison to five hits and allowed just one unearned run in seven innings to pick up the win. Bucknell starter R.J. Grant worked a solid five innings, allowing just one run on six hits. Freshman Nick Yeager suffered the loss after surrendering three runs on three hits in one-third on an inning.
Georgia Southern opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning against Grant. With two outs, A.J. Zickgraf drilled a 1-0 pitch off the centerfield wall for a two-out double and quickly scored on J.R. Revere's first-pitch single to rightfield.
Bucknell finally broke through against Comstock in the top of the fourth inning and pushed across a run to even the contest at 1-1. Senior Eric Fishman laced a two-out triple into the right-centerfield gap and scored on Eagle shortstop Jemel Spearman's throwing error on a groundball by sophomore Pete Wolf.
The Eagles used three consecutive doubles in the game-deciding three-run sixth against Yeager.
Freshman Tim Peacock worked a scoreless two-thirds of an inning in relief, and senior Gregg Farmery shutout the Eagles over the last two innings.
Bucknell will host Cornell for a doubleheader on Saturday at noon in the Bison's 2002 home-opener.
