Bucknell Baseball Opens Season With a Pair of Losses at Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Bucknell University baseball team was swept by the University of Virginia in both teams' season-opening doubleheader this afternoon at the UVa Baseball Stadium.
The Cavaliers defeated Bucknell 10-3 in game one and 7-5 in the nightcap.
Senior shortstop Larry Scheetz led the Bison by going 4-for-8 over the two games. Junior B.J. Batterson went 2-for-3 with three RBI in the second game.
Virginia jumped to an 8-0 lead after five innings in game one. Junior Zach Allen took the loss on the mound, as he gave up seven runs in 4.1 innings pitched. Sophomore Cory Nadler pitched the final 3.2 innings and picked up five strikeouts while surrendering three runs.
In the second game the Bison put together a five-run rally in the top of the sixth, highlighted by a three-run double by Batterson. But Virginia's Canon Hickman halted the BU comeback by pitching 1.1 innings of scoreless relief to earn the save. Bucknell pounded out nine hits for the game, but fell behind 7-0 after five innings. Junior Kevin Burns took the loss after giving up seven runs in 4.1 innings pitched. Senior Gregg Farmery kept the Bison in the game with 1.2 innings of scoreless pitching.
The Bison will finish the three-game series tomorrow starting at 1 p.m.
