Bucknell Indoor Track and Field Kick Off The 2002-03 Season

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell University men's and women's indoor track and field teams started the indoor season by hosting the Bucknell Blue and Orange Open, Saturday. Over 20 visiting teams joined the Bison for the season opener.
On the men's side of competition, three gold medals were awarded to the Bison. Jeff Arek marked 14'9" to tie for first place in the pole vault event. Eric Furst also received a gold medal in the 3000-meter with a time of 8:39.78. The Bucknell distance medley relay team crossed the line at 10:38.31 to mark a first place finish.
Adam Kaufman received the bronze in the weight with a distance of 48'4". Noel Powell placed second in the long jump with a measurement of 23"7.25. Ryan Newberger clocked in at 50.51 in the 400-meter run and placed fourth. In the 800-meter, Thomas Prochilo (1:58.35) and Koran Evans (1:59.20) captured second and third place. Darrel Perry (7.78) and Richard Alexander (7.80) ran the 55m high hurdles and now stand fifth and sixth on Bucknell's All-Time list.
The women's team received three gold medals throughout the day. Maria Garcia threw the weight for a distance of 50'5" to place first, while Elizabeth Pendleton placed second with 50'3". In the mile, Theresa Dennis placed first with a time of 5:17.30. Nicki Piper (5:21.77), Kerryann Branker (5:22.54) and Jennifer O'Conner (5:23.67) followed behind Dennis to grab the next three finishes.
Abigail Bouzan-Kaloustain placed fifth in the pole vault event with a measurement of 9'10". Charity Brady clocked 59.45 in the 400m for a fourth place finish, which placed her ninth on the All-Time charts. Amy Calvo ran 2:24.00 in the 800m to place first upon the runners. Bucknell's women's distance medley relay team finished first with a time of 12:42.12.
Bucknell will return to action after the winter break, on Saturday, January 11 when they host the Gulden Relays in Gerhard Fieldhouse.
