Bison Men's Water Polo Qualifies For Eastern Championships

PRINCETON, N.J. - The Bucknell men's water polo team captured a 10-8 victory over Slippery Rock in game one on the second day of the Southern Division Championships in Princeton, N.J. The Orange and Blue fell to Princeton in the second game on Saturday, 16-7. The victory over Slippery Rock qualified Bucknell to advance to the Eastern Championships at Brown University.
Bucknell ended the first quarter of the Slippery Rock match-up, 2-2. The Bison pulled ahead in the second quarter, 3-0, and marked 2-2 in the third. To finally capture the 10-8 victory, the Orange and Blue gave up four goals while marking three in the fourth quarter.
The Bison got three goals from James Danforth in the Slippery Rock game. Bradley Roslyn and Chris Saxton each marked two goals apiece. Scott Afzal, Elliot Benoist and Daniel Lonnerdal added one goal each.
On defense, Bucknell marked 13 total steals. Danforth recorded seven steals for a team-high. Ernest Martin was in the cage for the Bison, recording five saves.
During the Princeton game, the Bison fell in the first quarter 7-1. At the half, Bucknell was down 12-2 and at the end of the third quarter 15-2. The Tigers captured the 16-7 win after the Bison grabbed a 5-1 scoring run in the fourth quarter.
The Orange and Blue recorded two goals each from Benoist and Lonnerdal. Other scoring Bison included Yerks, Danforth and Unroe.
Bucknell's defense captured nine steals against the Tigers. Roslyn tallied team-high three steals and Yerks and Danforth marked two each. Martin was in the cage for Bucknell.
Bucknell complete Saturday play with a 10-16 overall. The Bison will next face the winner of the Navy-John Hopkins match up, which was played at 7:00 p.m. tonight. Bucknell will continue play at the Southern Championships at 10:50 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 3.
