LEWISBURG, Pa. - Freshman Veronica Brown (Derwood, Md./Colonel Zadok Magruder), a member of the Bucknell University women's tennis team, has been named the Bull Run Inn Bison Athlete of the Week for the week ending October 20.
Brown became the first Bucknell women's tennis player in ten years to claim a gold medal at the Patriot League Individual Tournament, taking first at the second flight on Sunday, October 20, 2002. The event was held at Army on Saturday and Sunday, October 19-20.
The rookie became the first Bison to ever win at the second flight, taking victories over the top-two seeds on her way to the winners stand. On the first day, she opened play with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Lehigh's Maria Anorga, before knocking off top-seeded Kristina Georgieva of American, last year's champion, 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-4.
Brown claimed her first tournament title with an exciting 6-3, 7-5 win on Sunday over the second-seed, Annie Collier of Army. Brown trailed 5-0 in the second set before winning seven straight games for the victory. It was the ninth-straight singles win for the freshman.
Bucknell wraps up the fall season with competition at the ITA Regional Tournament, held at Harvard, on Friday-Sunday, October 25-27, 2002.
