BUFFALO, N.Y. - Toby Foster scored a game-high 17 points and broke Bucknell's backs with some long 3-pointers in the second half, leading Canisius to a 66-49 win over Bucknell at Koessler Athletic Center on Saturday afternoon.
The Bison (4-9) saw their two-game winning streak come to an end in their final non-league contest of the season. Canisius (2-8) snapped an eight-game losing streak.
The Golden Griffins stymied Bucknell in the first half, holding the Bison to 27.6 percent shooting and only 17 points as the hosts raced to a 13-point lead at the break. While limiting Bucknell to just a single field goal over an eight-minute span, Canisius used a 17-2 run to grab a 30-12 lead with 2:31 remaining in the half.
Brian Werner scored 11 of Bucknell's 17 points in the opening half, and his 3-pointer with 20 seconds left made it 30-17 at the break.
Trailing 37-18 following Dewitt Doss' second 3-pointer of the early moments of the second half, the Bison used a 12-2 run to claw back within nine points at 39-30 with 11:45 to play. But Foster, who became Canisius' all-time leading 3-point shooter, buried a long three in front of his own bench to quell the Herd rally and spark a run of seven straight Canisius points.
Matt Quinn's trey at he 8:23 mark got Bucknell back within 11 at 48-37, but again Foster stopped the rally with a bomb from the right wing, and Bucknell never got closer than 13 points the rest of the way. The Golden Griffins led by as many as 21 points at 64-43 following Chris Ravello's 3-pointer with 1:15 to play.
Canisius made 10 of 25 treys on the night and shot 41.4 percent overall. The Griffs were credited with assists on 21 of 24 baskets, including seven from point guard Brian Dux, who did not commit a turnover.
Boakai Lalugba, who was held scoreless in the first half, made 5 of 6 field goals in the second stanza and finished with his third double-double of the year with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Werner added 11 points and Chris Rodgers nine for the Bison, who held a 37-34 edge on the boards.
The Bison shot 37.7 percent from the field and canned 3 of 15 from 3-point range.
Bucknell returns to action on Wednesday, kicking off Patriot League play against Lafayette at 1:30 p.m.
