STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - The Bucknell University track & field teams put forth a solid showing at day two of the non-scoring Penn State National Open this afternoon.
Bucknell's women's team had six individuals and one relay team break into the school's all-time top-10 lists, and one school record was broken. Three individuals and one relay team for the men's squad made their way into Bucknell's all-time lists.
Senior Stephanie Bango led the Bison women by resetting her own school record and placing sixth among 35 competitors in the 800m run with a time of 2:09.08. Her time also met the NCAA Provisional standard. Bango also anchored the 1,600m relay team that placed fourth out of 12 schools in 3:51.54, fourth-best all-time at Bucknell. Freshman Amy Calvo, freshman Rehana Lanewala and senior LaTonya McSwain also competed on the 4x400m relay squad.
McSwain and Calvo also broke into Bucknell's all-time top-10 list in one individual event. McSwain placed 12th in the 800m run in 2:16.88, the fifth-fastest time ever at Bucknell, while Calvo took sixth in the 400m dash in 58.60, sixth on the all-time list.
Other members of the women's team who carved their names into the Bucknell record books were senior Kelly McConnell, freshman Kiley MacDonald and freshman Tolulope Fayanjuola. McConnell ran the sixth-best time in school history and placed 11th in the 1,000m run in 2:57.77, and MacDonald sprinted to the eighth-fastest time in the 200m dash, taking 26th in the event in 26.36. With a leap of 17'10 ?", good for 10th place, Fayanjuola recorded the ninth-best mark in the long jump in BU history.
For the men's team, junior Eric Furst posted the highest finish on the afternoon. Furst placed third in the 1,000m run in 2:26.48, seventh on the Bucknell all-time list. Freshman Ryan Newberger also made history for Bucknell, racing to an 11th-place finish in the 200m dash in 22.12, the second-best time in school history. Newberger was also the top freshman finisher in the 200.
Junior Greg Costello also cracked the top-10 for Bucknell in the 3,000m run, finishing seventh out of 22 competitors in 8:18.14, the eighth-best time ever at Bucknell. Bucknell notched an impressive showing in the 1,600m relay as well, as the team of freshman Matt Nini, Newberger, Furst and sophomore Noel Powell placed 11th in the event in 3:19.42, the second-best time in school history and just 0.56 seconds shy of the school record.
Both track & field squads will return to action next Saturday at the Ohio State Invitational.
