LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell University men's and women's cross country teams started their 2001 season on the right foot Saturday morning at the "Gulden Duals," held at the Bucknell University Golf Club, with both squads sweeping their competition. The men's team defeated Rutgers (18-43), Syracuse (18-45) and Siena (15-50) to go a perfect 3-0 on the day while the women's team knocked off Siena (18-43) and Syracuse (19-41).
The Bison dominated the men's five-mile race, with their top five runners all placing among the top 10 finishers in the 59-man field. Junior Greg Costello was victorious in the men's race, crossing the finish line first in 26:03.13. Senior Evan Honeyfield finished in a close third place in 26:28.69. Rounding out the Bison's team scoring was junior Lou Palma, placing sixth in 26:34.47, sophomore Marcus Jones, who took seventh in 26:37.23, and sophomore Wesley Reinhardt, the ninth-place finisher at 26:41.93.
"Our men ran a very controlled race and most ran very well over the second half of the course," remarked head coach Kevin Donner. "We trained through this meet and we look forward to running at Penn State next weekend."
Bucknell was just as strong on the women's side, as the Bison women also had all of their top five competitors break the top-10. Senior Becki Marshall placed first out of 42 competitors in the women's 3.1 mile race, clocking an 18:59.49 to edge out runner-up Leah Folmsbec of Syracuse by just under two seconds. Junior Theresa Dennis was the Bison's next finisher, taking third place in 19:36.04. Other Bison who figured into the team scoring were senior Kristin Ferrell, fourth in 19:41.00, junior Kelly McConnell, sixth 19:46.62, and senior Chris Crowe, ninth in 20:04.57.
"I was very pleased with our first race," said Donner of the women's performance. "We ran intelligently over the first mile and then took control over the next two miles. We put in a good mileage week, which should prepare us for the bigger meets."
Both team return to action next Saturday when they travel to Penn State University for the Spiked Shoe Invitational with races beginning at 11 a.m.
