
Men's Water Polo Team Opens Season With Victory over Boston College; Drops One to UMass

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Bucknell men's water polo team opened the season on a strong note, picking up a 12-4 victory over Boston College in the first game of the Navy Invitational in Annapolis, Md., on Saturday, September 1. The Bison then faced perennial power Umass in the second game, falling 11-5 to the Minutemen.
In game one, the Bison jumped out to an early lead and never looked back on their way to a 12-4 victory. Junior Adam Yerkes scored three goals for the Orange and Blue. Freshmen Elliot Benoist and Nick Ferring tallied their first collegiate points, both netting two goals in the victory. In addition, Benoist handed out three assists and grabbed one steal, while Ferring had one steal and one ejection drawn in his debut. Also in the scoring column was senior co-captain Ryan McCarty with two goals, sophomore John Kearney with one and freshman Paul Yerkes with his first career score. Senior co-captain David Kennedy made the start in goal for the Bison, stopping two shots and recording two assists.
In the second game of the day, Bucknell challenged Massachusetts to a 5-4 halftime score, before falling behind for a final count of 11-5. Junior Daniel Lonnerdal led the team with two goals, one assist, three steals and one ejection drawn. Doing the rest of the scoring for BU was Benoist, sophomore Jamie Saettele and freshman Aaron Platshon.
Bucknell's season record stands at 1-1 overall. The Bison play Johns Hopkins at 10:05 a.m. on Sunday, September 2, for a chance to play for fifth place.
