LEWISBURG, Pa. - The "Gulden Duals" cross country meet, named in honor of the late Bucknell University head cross country and track and field coach Art Gulden, will be held Saturday at the Bucknell University Golf Club.
Bucknell, Rutgers, Siena, Syracuse and the Bucknell Alumni Team are slated to compete in the men's race, while Bucknell, Siena and Syracuse round out the women's field. Action begins at 9:30 a.m. with the men's 5-mile race, which will be followed by the women's 5-K starting at 10:15 a.m.
Gulden, who coached the Bison to 68 conference titles in 31 years, passed away on May 19, 2001 while attending the Eastern College Athletic Conference and IC4A Track and Field Championships after a lengthy battle with cancer.
Gulden's coaching career was marked by many highlights. His men's cross country teams won 18 straight conference titles between 1975-92, and won three IC4A championships. Arguably Bucknell's most nationally-accomplished sports program, the Bison men's cross country program qualified for the NCAA Championships nine times in the last 21 years, and at one point compiled a remarkable dual-meet winning streak of 167 -- spanning 16 years.
In 1999, Gulden led the women's cross country team to its first at-large selection to the NCAA Championship in school history. The Bison would go on to finish 24th in the nation that season.
Gulden earned the respect of his peers in both the East Coast Conference and the Patriot League, and in fact was named Patriot League Coach-of-the-Year 20 times in the 11-year history of the conference.
Both of Bucknell's men's and women's cross country teams should be strong once again in 2001 under new head coach Kevin Donner. The women's team, which has won the Patriot League Championship each of the last two seasons, returns three all-league members in Becki Marshall, Theresa Dennis and Christina Crowe. The men's squad welcomes back six of its top seven runners, including all-league harriers Greg Costello and Kevin Weatherill, from last year's team that finished second at the Patriot League Championship.
Competing as members of the Bucknell Alumni Team will be Dave Bronfenbrenner, Kevin Doyle, Brian Fullem, Dave Granger, Brian Harshman, Jeff Hines, Jamie Kempton and Brad Wertz.
