LOCK HAVEN, Pa.- The Bucknell University men's and women's cross country teams swept the competition this afternoon at the Lock Haven Invitational. With a team score of 32, the men's team defeated five other teams, while the women's team compiled a 41-point score and placed first among five schools.
The men's team rested its top 14 finishers from last weekend's meet for today's event, while the second through the 10th best runners on the women's team from last weekend did not compete as well.
Bucknell senior Becki Marshall won the women's 6,000 meter (3.8 mile) race in 22:17.25, over a full minute faster than her nearest competitor.
"Becki needed a race after taking the past two weekends off, and she ran a very controlled race," remarked head coach Kevin Donner.
Crossing the line next for Bucknell was junior Michelle Baylor, who finished fourth among 53 runners in 23:48.32. Sophomore Cecily Cairns also broke the top 10 for the Bison, taking seventh in 24:07.54. Completing the team scoring for Bucknell were freshman Jennifer Marsh and junior Katie Fantauzzo. Marsh placed 14th in 24:41.10, and Fantauzzo was 16th in 24:47.75.
"I was very impressed not only with how our women competed, but with their attitudes as well," said Donner. "Even though we held out many of our top runners, they went into this race with the intent of winning."
On the men's side, three Bison broke the top 10 en route to the team title. Bucknell's top finisher was sophomore Stephen Schaeffer, who placed fifth in the 69-man field in 26:08.33. Sophomore Aaron Hanlon and junior Garfield Mathis were the next two harriers wearing the Orange and Blue to complete the 8,000 meter (5 mile) course. Hanlon took eighth place in 26:37.44, and Mathis finished ninth in 26:38.49. Also figuring into the team scoring for Bucknell were junior Matias Palavecino, who placed 11th in 26:42.22, and sophomore Ken Holroyd, the 13th-place finisher in 27:00.84.
"This meet gave our middle-tier runners a great opportunity to develop as distance runners and help the program in a competitive environment," said Donner. "I was very proud in how they responded."
Both teams return to action next weekend at the Paul Short Invitational, hosted by Lehigh University. Races start at 9:30 a.m.
